Camping Safaris Kenya: 10 Items to Pack for a Dreamlike Experience

Like any other safari to Kenya, you must prepare for your camping safari by ensuring you pack all the things you need. Here is a checklist of what you should carry for your Kenya camping tour.

1. Passport, E-tickets, and Travel Insurance

You’d rather forget anything else, but please double-check that you have packed these vital documents that you need to travel from your country to Kenya. We advise you to have a small sling-back bag on you at all times to carry these vital documents.

2. Prescription and Prevention Medications

I happen to have allergies and nasal sinuses. So, whenever I am traveling, I have to carry my medicine with me. We are in a long-term relationship.

Understandably, you may opt not to bring your medication but buy them here in Kenya instead. However, it is recommended that you carry them because you may not get the specific brand of medicine you use.

Carry some anti-diarrhea medicine. Also, bring prevention meds such as painkillers, antacids, and tablets. Finally and very importantly, you want to avoid traveler’s diarrhea when camping.

3. Prescription Glasses and Sunglasses

Macho nne (four eyes), as bespectacled people are called here in Kenya, this is for you. If you use prescription glasses, please carry them when coming for your camping safaris in Kenya

A spare pair is vital because camping can get rough sometimes, and the ones you have may break or get lost due to constant movement. Do not forget to carry sunglasses, too, because you will be outdoors most of the time, and the sun in Kenya can be pretty bright.

4. Pack Your Camera and Binoculars During Camping Safaris Kenya

Kenya is one of the most picturesque places you will ever visit. You will have much to capture, from wildlife to vegetation, people, and food. You won’t notice your camping trip coming to an end.

I guarantee you will be amazed when you come to Kenya for a camping safari. You never know what lurks in the bushes! Carry your binoculars which will come in handy, especially during game viewing. You may need to carry extra memory for your videos and photos.

5. Clothing and Toiletries During Kenya Adventure Camping Holidays

I know this isn’t rocket science, and of course, you will pack clothes, but what clothes will you bring? Remember you are within weight restrictions, especially if you will be using light domestic aircraft.

International airlines will allow you to carry up to 30kgs, so if you use this option, this will not be an issue for you. However, the light aircraft will only allow 15kgs, including hand luggage.

This is not much considering all the extra things you have to buy, so let’s see the kind of clothes you need to bring for your Kenya Camping safari.

      a. Do not carry a lot of clothes.

It will be hard to get around when you have a lot of luggage. Three pairs of camping clothes, a smart outfit for an evening dinner party, and two pairs of casual gear for when you are traveling in and around the cities will do just fine.

      b. Select neutral-colored and practical clothes.

Cotton clothes are best for camping because they do not easily tear and are light but warm at the same time. We advise you to wear clothes in layers to cope with the fluctuating day and night temperatures.

For ladies, sometimes the game drives may be bumpy, so carry a firm, comfortable bra. Also, have a sarong called ‘shuka’ and a bandanna or cotton scarf. These items will come in handy all through your safari. Have a raincoat or small umbrella in case it rains. Socks, do not forget socks.

      c. Do not carry high heels or slippers for camping.

You can have a couple of firmly strapped sandals for the warmer days. Consider shirts with ventilation and trousers that can be converted into a pair of shorts during your camping safaris in Kenya.

Although Kenya does not have four seasons, some mornings and nights can be chilly, depending on your camping location. So, carry vests, t-shirts, and maybe one slightly heavy sweater. This way, when the day warms, you can peel off the layers, and as it cools again in the evening, you will put them back on.

Long-sleeved shirts and blouses are suitable for protection from sunburn and insects, but be careful when you are around a campfire.

      d. Consult your travel agent about the weather.

Consult your tour provider about the weather before coming to avoid carrying burdensome and unnecessary clothing. If it’s going to be cold, bring thermal underwear clothes, which will keep you warm and will be easier and lighter to carry.

      e. Don’t carry blankets.

Do not carry blankets because most camps in Kenya offer bedding in their tents. Laundry services are available in most camping safari places so that the bedding will be sanitary.

      f. Do not forget your swimwear.

Most camps will have a swimming pool, and you will not believe the wonders a dip in the pool will do after a long day in the sun.

      g. Carry your toiletries.

Lastly, have your toiletries covered tightly to avoid spillage and the delicate ones wrapped in clothing to prevent breakage. You can even have them packed in smaller toilet bags to go into your larger bag.

Have your lotion, sunblock, mosquito repellants, antifungal cream, soap/shower gel, sanitary pads, wet wipes, and sanitizers. Also, carry your toothpaste, toothbrush, hair brushes, hair care products, and a roll of tissue paper packed and ready to go.

Some Items to Pack During Your Kenya Camping Tour

6. Phone, Laptop or Tablet, and Chargers

Well, if you have a tablet, it’s the best to carry because it is less bulky than a laptop. Do not forget your phone, as it will be necessary in helping you get around, keep in touch with your family and friends back home, and make calls to your hosting team in case of an emergency.

These electronics will help you store your photos and videos and offer entertainment when you want to watch a movie or listen to music during your free time. Remember to carry their chargers and a Kenyan adaptor plug.

7. Odds and Ends That Will Allow You to Hack a Camping Safari in Kenya

Pack a good rechargeable torch. These are the nitty-gritty that will make your camping experience more enjoyable, if not more memorable. Most camps offer torches, but it is advisable to carry one as sometimes it can be dark in the bush or inside the tent at night.

Headlamps are the best because they will free your hands from other activities. You can also bring a fascinating book to keep you busy when you are delayed at the airport or when you become a victim of African timing (we apologize in advance).

When I went camping, I found my diary to have been the best thing I took with me because I could record everything that happened to me every day. I remember my trip like it was yesterday each time I read my diary.

You may want to carry one too. Or a sketch pad if you prefer drawing.

8. Pocket Money

Perhaps we should have started this and advised you to check the following camping safari in Kenya guide. Aside from documents, money is an essential item to have. When you are traveling outside your home, anything can happen.

Unpredictable emergencies often occur, which require sorting. Therefore, carry enough cash to last through your camping safaris in Kenya. You will also need money to buy souvenirs for you and your loved ones back home and to sample Kenyan street food.

9. Patience, Adventure, and a Sense of Humor

When you come for your camping safaris in Kenya, you may experience reverse culture shock. Although we are a fast-developing country, we still have a lot of work to do.

Some things may not operate as you are used to, so we kindly ask that you are patient with us. Our team will make it their job to assist you in everything, but you still have to cooperate with us.

Come with an open mind and a spirit willing to explore and discover all a Kenya Safari offers. Although you must be a tad careful, you must also let go and enjoy yourself. And lastly, find joy in the little things.

You will find that you are the center of attention in some areas you visit. Do not take offense to this. Most Kenyans are friendly and happy to see a Mzungu among them.

10. Camping Safaris Kenya – Bonus Tips

Do not wear clothing that can be interpreted as ‘camouflage’ such as ‘combat’ style coloring.  Even if it is a trending fashion statement, don’t wear them during your Kenya camping holiday.

The Kenyan Police often question people wearing these garments, mainly because some Kenyans like to pretend they are policemen for God knows why.  When coming for camping safaris in Kenya, avoid packing expensive jewelry.

This is because you may not have time to put them on; save them for a dinner party, if any. Avoid carrying anything of great value to you- you do not want to risk damage or loss. Last but not least, secure your luggage by using a lock combination.

If your bags do not have their locking mechanism, use extra padlocks whose keys should be put in that sling bag you keep on you at all times. The same bag will house your travel documents, such as a passport.
