The Detailed Itinerary of the 5 Days Wildebeest Migration Safari in Kenya

Our 5 days, 4 nights Kenya Migration Safari Package is perfect for the adventurous traveler wanting to experience the magical Great Migration first-hand. Here is what you can expect to see and do during the safari.

Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara - Great Wildebeest Migration Afternoon Safari

Our professional safari guide will meet you at JKIA when you land in the morning (if you are already in Nairobi, we will pick you up from the Nairobi hotel or any other location). The guide will welcome you to your exclusive safari land cruiser and transfer you to Masai Mara National Reserve or Wilson Airport, if you opt for the flying Kenya migration safari packages.

We recommend a flight from Nairobi to Masai Mara for family holidays and explorers who want to avoid the 6-hour drive. Road transfers are suitable for those who want cheap Masai Mara safari packages. That’s said, the road Kenya safaris allow you to see more of our country at your pace. They offer you the true, Out of Africa safari experience.

The road trip from Nairobi to Masai Mara takes 6 hours with two stops. One at The Great Rift Valley View Point, and a second one at Narok for last minute shopping.

Whichever option you choose, the aim is to reach Maasai Mara National Reserve safely and enjoy the game drives. On day 1, you will enjoy lunch at the hotel and then rest for a while before heading out for an afternoon game drive.

It’s only logical to not expect a lot of drama as the crocs have had their fill and will not be in the mood to hunt. But the crocs know that lean days are ahead, and so the chase does not stop.

Our guide will take you around the savanna where the predators will be feasting on the newly arriving animals. After the sun goes down, we retreat to the lodge or camp for dinner and relaxation.

Day 2, 3, & 4: Full-Day Kenya Migration Safari with River Crossing

The Mara River is swollen, and animals are escaping the temporary dry season in Tanzania to get to the other side. Grab your camera and let’s capture some of the drama!

We will take off to your exclusive safari land cruiser early in the morning after a cup of freshly brewed coffee or chai (Kenyan tea). For the next 7 to 8 hours, you will watch as the animals fight each other to make it across and enjoy fresh pasture.

You will also get deeper into the jungle to see the situation beyond the river. Herbivores have plenty of grass now that the rains have fallen, and giraffes have the juiciest of leaves thanks to the new sprouts.

These game drives will see you take lunch right at the jungle to give you the maximum chance to witness the migration to the fullest.

About the Maasai Mara Migration

From July, something spectacular happens in East Africa – the Masai Mara Migration kick-starts. During the event, over 1.5 million wildebeests, more than 200,000 zebras, and different species of antelopes will move from Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya.

The migrating herd covers a distance of over 2,000 miles, only to reach the Mara-Serengeti border between the end of June. The climax of the Masai Mara Serengeti migration is the Mara River crossing which occurs between July and August; making this the best time to book a Kenya Migration Safari package.

Surprisingly, no one knows exactly what triggers the great wildebeest migration and there are no discernable signals. It only takes the first 1 or 2 wildebeest to sniff the air and decide the time is right and the Mara-Serengeti migration starts.

However, the one thing that is certain, the great wildebeest migration is a long and arduous journey. Even without the attention of predators, about 2,000 of the migrating animals die from exhaustion, starvation, or disease.

Every day, fresh carcasses are left behind, crocodiles feast to the maximum, and predators launch lethal attacks. The result is a dramaturgical event that was named one of the 8 wonders of the world in 2007. A must witness phenomena for Kenya Safari lovers.

About Masai Mara National Reserve

The Masai Mara National Reserve, located in southwestern Kenya, is an extraordinary wildlife sanctuary, home to a diverse range of species. The reserve is globally renowned for its spectacular populations of lions, cheetahs, and elephants, along with the annual migration of over a million wildebeest.

Beyond the remarkable mammal encounters, it’s a birder’s paradise, boasting over 470 species of birds, including the distinctive Maasai ostrich and the martial eagle. Visitors to the reserve can indulge in various activities, from classic game drives and hot air balloon safaris to cultural interactions with the local Maasai community, making the Masai Mara an experience of a lifetime.

Optional Hot Air Balloon Ride at USD 475

For the best view, we will take you on a hot air balloon ride. During this time, you will watch some of the animals stand on the shores of the Mara River, contemplating whether to cross or stay.

You will see the strategy they use to try and escape the Nile Crocodiles, and as the balloon gets lower, you will capture the struggle between herbivores and the crocs of the Mara. The balloon will follow the animals to the Kenyan side, and you may be horrified to see a gazelle that made it past a croc get turned into a snack by a lion.

Sad, right? But then again, the rules of the jungle dictate so. The ride only lasts an hour, but it gives you an aerial view of the Mara, the Great Rift Valley, and the first rays of the sun. After the ride, we take a champagne breakfast at the launch site, then board our luxurious 4×4 safari land cruisers and continue with the migration game drives until evening.

Day 5: Maasai Village and Transfer to Nairobi

The Kenya migration safari has ended and it’s time to head back to Nairobi. Depending on the option you choose, you should be in the capital by afternoon. Before leaving this side of Kenya, you will visit a Maasai village.

Locals are always engaging, and the children will entertain you with songs. You will also get the opportunity to buy souvenirs handmade by the Maasai women and children. In doing so, you will be making it possible for communities to send their kids to school or build shelters to fight traditions such as female genital mutilation.

You will Dance and Jump with the Maasais, as they delight you with anecdotes of their acclaimed culture. We hope you had a great migration safari. The guide will drop you off at JKIA or a hotel in Nairobi.

FAQs About Masai Mara Wildebeest Migration

A migration safari is an awe-inspiring journey through nature’s rhythm, providing a front row seat to one of the most spectacular wildlife events on the planet. As millions of wildebeest and zebras traverse the plains in search of fresh grazing, the landscape comes alive, creating scenes of breathtaking drama.

These safaris offer a unique opportunity to witness the circle of life in its rawest form, a spectacle that leaves indelible impressions on its spectators.

1. What is Masai Mara migration?

Masai Mara migration is the annual movement of over 1.2 million wildebeests, over 200,000 zebras, and some species of antelopes from the vast plains of Serengeti in Tanzania, across the swollen Mara River and into the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. The migration occurs between July and October.

2. Which river falls in the way of the annual wildebeest migration in Kenya?

The Mara River acts as the ultimate do-or-die obstacle during the annual wildebeest migration in Kenya. The Mara originates from the Mau escarpment in Kenya, and flows for nearly 400 km before it drains into Lake Victoria.

The river flows in Kenya for about 65% of its length, and 35% of it flows through Tanzanian landscapes. It is the grand stage where millions of wildebeest contend with the cold stare of death on their path to the lush green plains of the Mara reserve and their journey back to the Serengeti.

3. Which is better? Masai Mara or Serengeti?

There are numerous similarities and differences between the Masai Mara and Serengeti which makes it hard to say which is better. The Mara reserve offers the best views of the actual crossing of wildebeests as they migrate from the north of Serengeti to the southern plains of the Mara.

Also, when it comes to infrastructure, Masai Mara is more developed and offers a perfect safari experience. The Serengeti National Park is many times larger than the Mara, but both reserves have a similar ecosystem and an abundance of natural resources.

4. Which is the best month to visit Masai Mara?

The best Great Migration Kenya Months are from late June to October when the plains are teeming with wildlife. The wildebeest migration has already reached the Mara where they stay until October.

If you plan your visit to Masai Mara between July 15 and August 15, you have a chance to witness the spectacular drama of wildebeests crossing the river and fighting to escape the jaws of death.

The not-so-lucky ones get devoured by the ferocious crocs and other predators. In the Mara, wildlife viewing is good all-year-round, but the migration is the epitome of the safari experience!

5. Has the migration started in Masai Mara?

The migration in Masai Mara starts towards the end of June through to mid-October as herds of wildebeests travel from the Serengeti plains to Masai Mara. During this time, the Mara has greener pastures because of the rains.

The animals follow a set circular route which they have been following since time immemorial and pass through major rivers such as Grumeti River before they encounter the Mara River. The Mara River has at least ten crossing points on the migration route, all equally dangerous to the herds.

6. How do wildebeest know where to migrate?

The wildebeests know when and where to migrate based on pure instincts. Their decision to migrate is a natural response to weather; following the rains and the growth of lush green grass. When the dry season approaches in the Serengeti, the herds head towards the west from Olduvai plains, pause at the trio of lakes Ndutu, Masek, and Lagarja, and head north into Masai Mara National Reserve.

7. What month is the Great Migration in Kenya?

The best part of the Great Migration in Kenya occurs in July when massive herds of wildebeests are crossing the Mara River to pour across the plains. In other words, July is the best month to track and witness this spectacular natural event in all its breathtaking glory.

The crossing continues to August and early September when all the animals finally make it to Masai Mara.
