The Detailed 18 Days, 17 Nights Kenya Family Safari Tours Itinerary

Kenya is our home, and we promise to show you the splendid beauty of our country better than anyone else. Without further delays, here is the detailed 18 days Kenya safari & family holidays itinerary.

Day 1: Pick up from Airport, Nairobi Animal Orphanage, David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, & Giraffe Centre

Our guide will be at the airport about 30 minutes before your arrival time to welcome you to Kenya after your plane lands. After exchanging greetings and a short briefing on your safari, the guide will usher you to your 4×4 luxury safari Land Cruiser.

You will head to Nairobi Animal Orphanage from the airport and later to David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage around 11 am. Nairobi Animal Orphanage is located within Nairobi National Park and is a treatment and rehabilitation center for wild animals and birds.

Animals found here include lions, cheetahs, jackals, warthogs, leopards, buffalo, baboons, Sokoke cats, and monkeys. You will also see several birds at close range, such as crowned cranes, parrots, guinea fowls, and ostriches.

You might get the opportunity to see the rangers feed the animals and take some photos for a memorable experience at this Nairobi attraction. Later, the safari guide will drive you out of the animal orphanage and take you to the elephant orphanage.

David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage is a home for orphaned elephants taken care of by Sheldrick Trust before being integrated into the wild later in their lives. Here you will learn more about the Trust’s conservation work for elephants and have an opportunity to see young elephants and some rhinos.

Visiting time at the orphanage is limited between 11 am and 12 noon to reduce the contact hours between animals and humans. The animals are expected to be released back to their natural habitat after some years at the orphanage.

After this, you will check into a hotel where you will take lunch and rest for some time before you are taken to visit Giraffe Centre in the afternoon. Betty and Jock Leslie Melville established the center in 1979 to protect the vulnerable Rothschild giraffes found only in East African grasslands.

Apart from learning more about these tall-necked animals, you will enjoy feeding them on raised platforms, creating a close bond with them. By early evening you will head to your hotel for the night in anticipation of the following day’s experience out of the capital.

Day 2: Transfer to Ol Pejeta & Afternoon Game Drive Ol Pejeta Conservancy

The day will start with an early breakfast, and afterward, our guide will pick you up to start the journey to Nanyuki, which will take about 3 hours. Nanyuki lies northwest of Mount Kenya, and along the way, you will see the beautiful sight of Africa’s second highest snowcapped mountain.

You should be in Nanyuki by noon, but before heading to your hotel for check-in, you will stop at the Equator Marker near Nanyuki Town. Nanyuki Town is one of the few towns in Kenya that the Equator crosses. There is also a small market for African cultural clothing and curios near the marker.

You will learn an interesting fact about how water behaves on different sides of the latitude at the marker. The experiment is charged a small fee of around USD 5.

The guide will assist you in check-in to the hotel and leave you to take lunch and relax. You will also have an afternoon game drive in Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is situated on the Equator, west of Nanyuki Town and Mt Kenya, and east of Aberdare Ranges. After the afternoon game drive, you will wind up the long day with a spectacular view of the evening sun descending on the slopes of Aberdare as you return to the hotel.

Day 3: Full-Day Game Drive at Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Your third day of Kenya family safari packages starts with breakfast, and then you head to the conservancy for a full-day safari. Ol Pejeta is famous for being the home of the only two remaining Northern White Rhinos in the world, and you will get a rare opportunity of seeing them.

There is also a significant number of black rhinos as it is the largest sanctuary for black rhinos in East Africa. Another thing you only get in Ol Pejeta Conservancy are chimpanzees that have been rescued worldwide. You will have a chance to interact, feed, and take memorable photos with these fantastic apes.

But Ol Pejeta is not only about rhinos and chimpanzees;  you will also come across many other animals during your game drive. Since it will be morning hours, be prepared to capture breathtaking pictures of predators going after their prey, especially cheetahs and lions.

What about gazelles and zebras grazing in the rich African savanna grassland and warthogs roaming here and there? All those are experiences you won’t forget soon. By noon, it will be already hot, and many animals will have gone into hiding or to their resting places, making it the perfect time for the packed lunch in the jungle.

After lunch, the safari guide will take you through the afternoon game drive to wrap up the exciting day at Ol Pejeta. This time around, you are also likely to encounter the cats hunting, different birds heading to their nests, and many other animals you might have missed earlier.

Late evening, it will be time to return to your hotel to rest for the night. On your way, you will see some animals that come alive during sunset.

Day 4: Transfer to Aberdare & Afternoon Game Drive at Aberdare National Park

Your family safari holidays take you to Aberdare National Park. You will eat breakfast and start this short journey at around 9 am. The two places are not far apart, and by noon you should be checking in at one of the famous hotels in the park, where you will take lunch and relax.

Later you will head for a game drive at the park. It will be an exciting game drive around one of Kenya’s most beautiful scenic regions. Aberdare National Park is located about 150km east of Nairobi on the slopes of the Aberdare ranges, which forms the eastern escarpment of the Great Rift Valley.

Apart from wildlife, there are many other attractions, including beautiful mountain scenery, waterfalls, fishing, hiking, and other activities. The park also carries a significant part of world history, as it is inside here, at Treetops Lodge, where Princess Elizabeth ascended to a queen after his father’s death.

During the game drive, you will see forest elephants, buffalos, antelopes grazing, waterbucks, lions, and black rhino, among others. After going around, it will be already evening, and you will return to your hotel, where you will be treated to different sounds of animals and birds into the night.

Day 5: Full-Day Game Drive at Aberdare National Park with Packed Lunch

Today, your game drive will start early, and our guide will pick you up immediately after breakfast, ready for the exploration. You will use different routes to try and spot some rare animals found here, including the black leopard, black serval, mountain bongo, suni, and bushbuck.

By 1 pm, you will take your packed lunch deep inside the African jungle, where the melodic tunes of different birds and chattering of cheeky monkeys will entertain you. After the delicious lunch,  it will be time for yet another adventure.

The guide will take you to various scenes within the park. The park’s high mountain peaks, deep ravines, bamboo forest vegetation, and fantastic waterfalls are some of the beauty you will catch here.

You will have an opportunity to capture those beautiful scenes in photos, and even better, you can challenge yourself for a hike if conditions allow.

Day 6: Transfer to Nakuru and Afternoon Game Drive at Lake Nakuru National Park

Breakfast should be over by 8 am, and you will get a transfer to Lake Nakuru, where you will get a different kind of experience.  Lake Nakuru is one of the salty lakes within the Great Rift Valley in Kenya, famous for the flamingoes that come here to feed on the algae.

The Lake is surrounded by diverse animals, birds, and plant species within one of the smallest parks in Kenya, Lake Nakuru National Park. Before continuing to Nakuru, you will stop at Nyahururu Falls, located about 3km from Nyahururu Town at an elevation of 2,360m within the Aberdare ecosystem.

Nyahururu Falls, also known as Thompsons Falls, is a 74m waterfall on the Ewaso Ng’iro River that rises from Aberdare to Lorian Swamp in North Eastern Kenya. Here you will take some photos with the falls in the background as you also catch some fresh air. Later, you will head directly to Lake Nakuru.

You will be in Nakuru at around noon, where you will check-in in a hotel, take lunch and rest before embarking on an afternoon game drive at the park.

Our guide will be able to drive you to most parts of the park from 2 pm to around 6 pm since the park covers about 188km2. Other than flamingoes, Lake Nakuru is home to over 400 species of birds, including the African Fish Eagle, shining sunbird, and slender-billed greenbul.

Some animals you will find here include black and white rhinos, buffalos, Rothschild’s giraffe, lions, and impalas. You will return to your hotel for dinner and accommodation after this drive of your family holidays to Kenya.

Day 7: Morning Game Drive at Lake Nakuru & Transfer to Masai Mara

This will be another day where you will be treated to another game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park after breakfast. Today you will visit Flamingo Hill, where you will watch lionesses relaxing on tree branches and even get a chance to take a photo.

Another exciting spot you will love is Makalia camp, where you are likely to spot another of the big five, the leopard. Other animals you will easily encounter are hippos in the rivers, giraffes, cheetahs relaxing, and mainly white rhinos busy feeding.

At around 10 am, you will get a transfer to Masai Mara in Narok, a journey that will take you about  hours from Nakuru Town. You will reach Narok Town by 2 pm, where you will make a stopover and take a late lunch before proceeding with the rest of the safari.

It will also be the perfect time to stretch and get anything you might have forgotten to buy in Nakuru. The remaining journey will take about 2 hours. You will be in Masai Mara in the evening, where you will check into the camp and relax.

Day 8: Full-Day Game Drive at Masai Mara National Reserve

Today, you will explore the world’s most famous reserve. Our guide will pick you up immediately after breakfast for a game drive.

The main tourist attraction here is the 8th wonder of the world, the wildebeest migration that happens from July to October. During this period, thousands of wildebeest cross crocodiles infested Mara River from Serengeti plains to Masai Mara for fresh grass and breed.

Another major attraction in Masai Mara is the African big five, which include lions, buffalos, leopards, rhinos, and elephants. Other wildlife you will encounter includes gazelles, antelopes, zebras, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and giraffes since you will have a lot of time to move around.

The reserve is also home to over 400 species of birds and will be a perfect opportunity to see some of them, especially during morning hours. You will have your lunch in the wild, somewhere under the acacia trees, where you can watch more wildlife.

The game drive never gets boring in Mara, so you will get another exciting afternoon game drive after lunch. This time you head to Mara River, where you will see hippos and crocodiles basking in the afternoon heat.

By now, it will be evening, and after a long successful day, you will head back to the camp to relax and spend the night.

Day 9: Hot Air Balloon ride, Visit a Maasai Village, & Evening Game Drive

Nothing makes the Mara adventure more memorable than complimenting the game drive with a hot air balloon tour of the park. Flying high up the skies of Masai Mara gives you an ultimate safari experience that you will remember for many years.

The never-ending landscape below of riverine forests and sprawling savannahs infused with the morning gold rays of the rising sun creates an unforgettable experience. This will also be a chance to watch a lot of animals and birds coming out or going to their hiding places from a vantage point of view.

The hot air balloon safari ends with a sumptuous breakfast out in the jungle as you prepare for another game drive. This time you will use different routes than the ones you used earlier to try and catch animals and birds you might have missed.

At noon, you will conclude the game drive and head to one of the Maasai villages, where you will experience their authentic culture. They live on the periphery of Masai Mara, and they consider themselves the custodians of this great reserve.

Many young Maasai work at the park as guides and guards. The Maasai are majorly nomadic pastoralists and are characterized by a unique culture symbolized by colorful dressing accompanied by lots of beads and pieces of jewelry.

You will get an opportunity to feel like one of them as you adorn these bright clothing and participate in the dances. Maasai village visit will surely give you a better understanding of this world-famous culture. You can also carry some of those regalia back home for remembrance.

Afterward, it will be time to head back to the camp for lunch and some rest, followed by the final game drive later in the day. The evening game drive will give you a chance to see the predators in action and also get a chance to see any other animal you might not have seen by now.

Day 10: Transfer to Naivasha, Boat Ride at Lake Naivasha & Walking Safari at Crescent Island

You will leave Masai Mara for Naivasha in the morning after breakfast, a journey that  takes about 3 hours.  You should be in Naivasha by noon. After arriving in Naivasha, you will check in at the hotel, take lunch, and rest before visiting Lake Naivasha.

Lake Naivasha is one of the few freshwater lakes within the Great Rift Valley and is located about 50km southwest of Nairobi. The lake and the adjacent islands are home to wild animals and birds, including pelicans and eagles.

One of the activities here is taking a boat ride around the Lake. You will love it as you watch some aquatic animals such as hippos at close range. Afterward, you will head to Crescent Island, where you will take a walking safari to experience one of the most beautiful islands in Kenya.

Besides enjoying the calm and relaxing fresh air on the island, you will see a variety of wildlife, including zebras, waterbucks, elands, impalas, and giraffes. The island has a plain terrain that makes it easy to explore, and it’s also safe as there are no dangerous animals here, such as lions and cheetahs.

By the time you are done, it will be evening, and you will go back to your hotel for the night, where you will have dinner and catch some sleep.

Day 11: Transfer to Amboseli & Afternoon Game drive at Amboseli National Park

Today, you will get a transfer to Amboseli National Park, and the journey will start immediately after your breakfast. This park is synonymous with large groups of African elephants, although there are still many other animals.

You will make a stopover at the Great Rift Valley Viewpoint, where you will get a chance to stretch as you take some photos with this immense valley in the background. The Great Rift Valley is a long and wide depression that covers a distance of about 7,000km from Lebanon in Asia to Mozambique in Southeast Africa.

You will arrive at Amboseli National Park around noon, where you will check in at a hotel and have lunch. Afterward, you will enjoy an afternoon game drive where you will get a perfect opportunity to see large herds of elephants feeding at close range.

You will also see other animals and birds, including zebras, giraffes, cranes, eagles, ostriches, cheetahs, and wildebeests. It will be a long day, and after the game drive, you will head to the hotel for the night, where you will still get a glimpse of some of the nocturnal animals.

Day 12: Morning & Afternoon Game Drive at Amboseli National Park

Soon after breakfast, you will start your adventure at Amboseli National Park. The park covers around 392km2; hence you will cover most of it. Our guide will take you to a vantage point where you can capture the magnificent view of Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

You will also see different bird species, including kingfishers, pelicans, hamerkop, and crakes. The best time to watch a lot of birds is in the morning. At this time, you will see many animals feeding, including elephants, cape buffalo, impala, spotted hyena, blue wildebeest, and cats such as lions chasing their prey.

Around 1 pm, you will head back to the hotel for a delicious lunch before embarking on another exciting game drive to see anything you might have missed. You will also get a chance to visit Lake Amboseli. The lake attracts animals and birds during the dry season and is another good point for watching.

Day 13: Transfer to Tsavo West & Afternoon Game Drive at Tsavo West National Park

You will head to one of the Largest Park in Kenya, Tsavo West National Park, which covers an area of approximately 9,065 sq. km. Your road trip to Tsavo West will take about 2hours. However, you will make a stopover at Lake Challa.

Lake Challa is a fascinating ancient crater lake found about 30km southeast of Mt Kilimanjaro and approximately 20km north of Taveta. The lake has an elevation of about 800m and is mainly fed by underground streams originating from the montane forest part of the mountain.

Besides the magnificent sight of the lake, you will also find some animals and birds, including peregrine, blue monkeys, kudus, baboons, and dik-dik, among others.

Upon your arrival, you will check in to a hotel, have lunch, and in the afternoon, you will head to the park for an afternoon game drive.

You will enjoy sights of animals that feed mainly in the afternoon, such as elephants, giraffes, antelopes, black rhinos, zebras, gerenuk, and many more. After a successful game drive, you will return to your hotel, where you will have dinner and stay overnight.

Day 14: Full-Day Game Drive at Tsavo West National Park with Packed Lunch

After an early breakfast, our guide will pick you up and set off for the start of a full-day game drive in Tsavo West National Park. Although the park is extensive, you will cover most of its essential tracks, mainly the ones you had not passed through the previous day.

This time, look out for the breathtaking sights of carnivorous, such as lions and cheetahs hunting while the herbivores scamper for safety. By 1 pm, many animals will have already taken a break from the scorching sun, and this will be the best time to catch some rest as you take the packed lunch.

After lunch, you will embark on yet another exciting game drive, this time with a concentration on incredible sights such as Mzima Springs. Mzima Springs are a series of four natural springs that have their source at a natural reservoir under the Chyulu Hills. The spring is one of the main attractions in this park.

Some animals you will see at the springs are hippos, Nile crocodiles, vervet monkeys, and various birds that feed on the many fruits. Expect to see other animals like rhinos, gazelles, elephants, impalas, and many others near the spring coming to take water.

Day 15: Transfer to Mombasa, Visit Fort Jesus, & Transfer to Diani Beach

Today, you will visit the coastal town of Mombasa, one of the oldest towns in Kenya. The journey starts around 6 am. You will take breakfast and then get the transfer to Mombasa and visit Fort Jesus.

During the tour, you will learn more about the town’s ancient history as you visit some of its many historical and cultural attractions. But a Mombasa tour will not be complete without a visit to the famous Fort Jesus. A historic building that the Portuguese built in 1593.

Fort Jesus was accredited as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, and a visit here will allow you to learn more about the ancient wars fought over control of the area.

After a successful exploration of Mombasa Town, you will get a transfer to the luxurious Diani Beach, where you will check into a hotel and relax for the rest of the day.

The Island is located about 75km south of Mombasa and approximately 3km off the coast of the Indian Ocean from Shimoni village. Upon arrival at Shimoni, a local guide will take you through a tour of the caves where enslaved people were held up before being taken to the Zanzibar slave market.
