Lake Bogoria National Reserve - AjKenyaSafaris.com

History tells us that Bishop Hannington was the ‘first’ to ‘discover’ Lake Bogoria, formerly called Lake Hannington. His exact words to describe this exquisite location were ‘the most beautiful view in Africa.’ The lake forms part of the ranger Lake Bogoria National Reserve.

The reserve is that and a lot more and is a sight to behold. Her picturesque sceneries attract tourists worldwide, but her beautiful lake and grasslands keep them returning for more.

At AjKenyaSafaris.com, we know more about Lake Bogoria National Reserve entrance fee, hot springs, flamingos, and more. So, keep us company as our Bogoria tour correspondents look at this national treasure.

Ultimate Guide to Lake Bogoria National Reserve - Climate & Vegetation

Lake Bogoria is among the most scenic lakes in Africa. The lake, which first received gazettement on the 20th of November 1973, is located 285 kilometers north of the country’s capital, Nairobi, and 10 kilometers from the equator.

The Lake Bogoria National Reserve is perfectly nestled at the foot of the eastern walls of the Rift Valley at a 1000m above sea level altitude.

Bogoria National Reserve Climate

Temperatures in the park are uniform all year long due to its proximity to the equator. Day temperatures take the upper twenties while the nights are generally cool.

Lake Bogoria Reserve Vegetation

The lake Bogoria National Park is mainly made up of thorny bush lands with some traces of riverine forest and acacia. The lake’s open shore is made up of grasslands highly tolerant to the acidic nature of the lake’s waters.

Although the reserve occupies 107km sq., Lake Bogoria makes up most of that area.

Top 3 Tourists Attractions at Lake Bogoria National Reserve

The major attraction of the park has to be the flamingoes. Huge flocks of these birds visit the waters of Lake Bogoria to feed on the blue-green algae. The spectacular sight of the pink waters of the lake meets the blue-colored skies is a must-see site for you.

Fall in love with the view of the pink flamingos as they rise and fall to the waters like the winter wheat. Other attractions here include:

Fascinating Lake Bogoria Hot Springs

Extra caution is advised when around the Bogoria hot springs. The springs are so hot that they can boil an egg in just seven minutes.

Wildlife Around the Lake Bogoria National Park

Lake Bogoria National Reserve is home to a variety of wild animals. Get to spot herbivores like the magnificent Kudu Antelope, Klipspringer, and Burchell’s Zebra, dik-dik gazelles, warthogs, impalas, baboons, and the Patas and the Vervet monkeys.

The cheetah, Leopard, Karakul cat, jackals, hyenas, and mongoose are some of the predators in the park.

Birds

The reserve is home to an estimated 135 bird species. Recent years have seen the flamingoes favor the lake over other neighboring lakes; the flamingo population here is now almost hitting the 2 million mark.

Other than the 135 bird species in the park, close to 50 species of migratory birds have also been recorded. This brings the total tally of bird species in reserve to 185. Bird watchers will have a blast here.

Common bird species in the park are; flamingoes, ostriches, cranes, ibis, and the hadada.

Fun Things to Do at Lake Bogoria National Reserve

The lake has three camping sites, all located on the southern side of the lake. The sites, however, do not offer any facilities, so be sure to carry your own.

The Fig Tree Campsite is, by far, a people’s favorite. It might be because it is perfectly sheltered under the shade of fig trees or because the campsite nears a cool water stream that comes a long way into helping one beat the heavy day temperatures.

Whatever it might be, the campsite is a perfect destination for you. Other camping sites are the Acacia campsite and the Riverside campsite. You can also set camp at the Papyrus Inn Garden or the Loboi Gate.

Other significant activities in the park are; nature walking, boat trips, and picnicking.

Accommodation - Lake Bogoria Hotel

There are few hotels around the Lake Bogoria National Reserve, but we assure you that the few available are way past tourist expectations. One famous hotel is the Lake Bogoria Spa Resort.

The four-star hotel is a luxurious hotel commonly referred to as the ‘healing place’ due to the presence of a spa famous for its cathartic value. Every room in the hotel is self-contained, endowed with; a telephone, safety locks, and air conditioning.

Best Time to Visit the Lake Bogoria National Reserve

Lake Bogoria is a visiting place all year round. We, however, recommend the July-October period. The July-October period is generally dry, reducing the number of water catchment areas available to animals.

It, therefore, becomes easier to spot animals since they now easily congregate in specific and fewer water zones.

Lake Bogoria National Reserve Entrance Fee

Lake Bogoria entrance fee is often USD 50. A day trip to Lake Bogoria National Reserve can cost a solo traveler from USD 200 when traveling with a safari van.

Lake Bogoria is in Which County? How to Get to the Reserve

A drive from Nairobi will only take you 4-5 hours. Lake Bogoria from Nakuru takes only 2-hrs. You can  come to this reserve in the morning and head back to Nakuru or Nairobi in the evening.
