I know this isn’t rocket science, and of course, you will pack clothes, but what clothes will you bring? Remember you are within weight restrictions, especially if you will be using light domestic aircraft.

International airlines will allow you to carry up to 30kgs, so if you use this option, this will not be an issue for you. However, the light aircraft will only allow 15kgs, including hand luggage. 

This is not much considering all the extra things you have to buy, so let’s see the kind of clothes you need to bring for your Kenya Camping safari.

      a. Do not carry a lot of clothes.

It will be hard to get around when you have a lot of luggage. Three pairs of camping clothes, a smart outfit for an evening dinner party, and two pairs of casual gear for when you are traveling in and around the cities will do just fine.

      b. Select neutral-colored and practical clothes. 

Cotton clothes are best for camping because they do not easily tear and are light but warm at the same time. We advise you to wear clothes in layers to cope with the fluctuating day and night temperatures.

For ladies, sometimes the game drives may be bumpy, so carry a firm, comfortable bra. Also, have a sarong called ‘shuka’ and a bandanna or cotton scarf. These items will come in handy all through your safari. Have a raincoat or small umbrella in case it rains. Socks, do not forget socks.

      c. Do not carry high heels or slippers for camping.

You can have a couple of firmly strapped sandals for the warmer days. Consider shirts with ventilation and trousers that can be converted into a pair of shorts during your camping safaris in Kenya.

Although Kenya does not have four seasons, some mornings and nights can be chilly, depending on your camping location. So, carry vests, t-shirts, and maybe one slightly heavy sweater. This way, when the day warms, you can peel off the layers, and as it cools again in the evening, you will put them back on. 

Long-sleeved shirts and blouses are suitable for protection from sunburn and insects, but be careful when you are around a campfire.

      d. Consult your travel agent about the weather.

Consult your tour provider about the weather before coming to avoid carrying burdensome and unnecessary clothing. If it’s going to be cold, bring thermal underwear clothes, which will keep you warm and will be easier and lighter to carry.

      e. Don’t carry blankets.

Do not carry blankets because most camps in Kenya offer bedding in their tents. Laundry services are available in most camping safari places so that the bedding will be sanitary.

      f. Do not forget your swimwear. 

Most camps will have a swimming pool, and you will not believe the wonders a dip in the pool will do after a long day in the sun.

      g. Carry your toiletries.

Lastly, have your toiletries covered tightly to avoid spillage and the delicate ones wrapped in clothing to prevent breakage. You can even have them packed in smaller toilet bags to go into your larger bag.

Have your lotion, sunblock, mosquito repellants, antifungal cream, soap/shower gel, sanitary pads, wet wipes, and sanitizers. Also, carry your toothpaste, toothbrush, hair brushes, hair care products, and a roll of tissue paper packed and ready to go.
