The Detailed 6 Night, 7 Day Kenya Safari Itinerary
Here is the detailed itinerary for your 7 days safari in Africa that showcases to you the best of Kenya.
Day 1: Pickup from JKIA – David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage & Hotel
Your safari guide will pick you up from the airport and chauffeur you to the nearby David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. Though only open for one hour daily (from 11 am to 12 pm), the orphanage leaves a lasting impression.
Watch as trained caregivers feed, bathe, and interact with baby elephants. Watch these young beasts spray each other with water, wallow in mud, and, on cooler days, indulge in a dust bath. And most important of all, learn about the orphanage’s rescue and rehabilitation efforts and adopt an elephant or two while at it.
Day 2: Nairobi to Nakuru – Boat Ride & Afternoon Game Drive
Breakfast, an early morning check-out, and off we go to Lake Nakuru, a stunning Great Rift Lake an hour’s drive away from Nairobi. On arrival, we check you into the Cliff, a tremendously beautiful safari lodge enfolded by lush vegetation and beyond stunning views of Lake Nakuru.
Treat yourself to a glass of wine at the lodge’s panoramic bar terrace, take a scenic walk in their organic garden, and at around 11 am, the guide will take you for a boat ride safari that ends at 2 pm. Join us for a leisurely boat ride.
See, boat rides in Lake Nakuru are not only cathartic but they also introduce you to a dumbfounding variety of birds as well as a stunning array of dramatic sceneries. Hippos, pelicans, the African fish eagle, flamingos, waterbucks- if it loves the water, then you’ll probably see it in Lake Nakuru.
And it gets better…
As you’re glided across the murky waters of Lake Nakuru, a delicious lunch will be served. Yup, right there, in the heart of the second largest freshwater lake in Kenya!
Your afternoon game drive begins after the boat ride.
You will be hard-pressed to find a more stunning setting for afternoon game drives than Lake Nakuru. The bushy grasslands, wooden savannah, picturesque ridges, towering escarpments, and huge wildlife varieties merge beautifully to create a captivating experience.
Day 3: Full-Day at Lake Nakuru National Park
Picture this… A scenic sunrise game drive that delivers you into an atmosphere of extraordinary tranquility and unparalleled views. On one side is Lake Nakuru, a breathtaking vision of pink flamingos, floating hippos, and piercing blue waters.
On the other, the wildlife… Over 56 different mammal species, according to experts, including the Big Five, giraffes, waterbucks, warthogs, monkeys, zebras, impalas, duikers, jackals, deers, gazelles, and wild dogs.
And then there’s the landscape… Spectacularly varied and virtually limitless, from the lush grasslands to the picturesque ridges and towering escarpments.
This landscape will be in your background as you enjoy a delicious packed lunch in the park’s heart- just imagine that! Again, it’s all about the wildlife and breathtaking vistas for your afternoon game drive.
Your guide takes you all around the park, skillfully highlighting every corner of it. Soon it is evening, and evenings in Lake Nakuru mean one thing only- that you get to experience the sunset. Magical! Yep! That’s the word. Absolutely, undeniably magical!
Day 4: Nakuru to Masai Mara & Afternoon Game Drive
Breakfast, an early morning check out, and start the road trip to Masai Mara. On arrival, we check you into Ilkeliani Mara Camp, a luxury lodge defined by its unwavering dedication to bespoke elegance.
Take the day to yourself… Cool off in the swimming pool, relax on your room’s private deck as you look across the golden, wildlife-swarmed grasslands, or treat your tastebuds to an adventure of their own at the camp’s restaurant.
Later, we will head for an afternoon game drive at Masai Mara National Reserve. This will give you the chance to spot the best wildlife in the reserve.
Day 5: Full-Day at Masai Mara – Hot Air Balloon and Game Drive with Picnic Lunch
A hot-air balloon safari across the Mara landscape is easily one of the most extraordinary safari experiences in the world. Okay, maybe we’re a little biased, but here’s how it goes.
We pick you up from your lodge just before sunrise and drive you to the balloon’s launch site. Here, you will enjoy a cup of chai as you watch the balloon’s staff prepare it for takeoff.
Before you know it, you are floating on air in a wildly spectacular setting hallmarked by golden grasslands with any wild animal you can imagine. Elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards, wildebeests, gazelles, dik-dik, and giraffes… Yes, you get to see lots of these, and the best part is that the balloon can be lowered for you to experience the wildlife more closely.
The ride is one hour long and commemorated by a delicious champagne breakfast in the park’s heart. From here, we continue with the full-day game drive until evening.
Day 6: Morning Game Drive & Horse Safari at Masai Mara
We embark on yet another game drive and like the previous ones, this one also commences just before sunrise. Just before sunrise because we want you there, in the heart of the park, when the beautiful orange sun illuminates the Mara grasslands. Another reason why this game drive begins at first light is that wildlife is at its liveliest in the mornings.
The creatures are in hundreds at this time, each scrambling for that early morning meal. Elephants, gazelles, zebras, wildebeests, buffaloes, giraffes, waterbucks, dik-dik, hippos, lions, bushbucks- keep your eyes peeled for these and so much more.
Later, we head for a horse safari that starts at 3 pm. To explore the Mara on a safari van? Breathtaking! To explore it on horse safari? Absolutely magical and experience the sundowner.
A horse safari in the Mara is a literal assault of the senses. Not only do you get mad adrenaline rush from riding amongst giraffes, elephants, elands, gazelles, and so on but you also get to feel the cold wind brush against your skin… You get to see the grass ripple beneath you and hear the birds singing as you ride past trees.
Day 7: Check-Out, Maasai Village, & Transfer to Nairobi
Breakfast, an early morning check out, and a quick stopover in a Masai village as we head out of the park. It is not every day that you get to interact with a community that has co-existed with the wild for centuries, so this one is definitely special.
And it’s not only that- this very cool community builds its houses (read huts) with human urine (uh-huh), cow dung, mud, grass, and sticks. And it gets better- they know how to make fire by rubbing two sticks together, so there’s a trick you can learn. And just in case you want to learn a dance move or two, they can teach you their famous Adumu jumping dance!
And… the colorful Maasai beadwork and shukas. You will be the snazziest boy/girl in town wearing one of these- buy one! From here, you will get a transfer to Nairobi to arrive in the late afternoon.
