Masai Mara Safaris
Embarking on a safari in the Masai Mara National Reserve is widely considered the ultimate wildlife adventure, and this claim is far from exaggerated. The reserve hosts an incredible variety of animals, including not just the renowned ‘Big Five’ but also the ‘Big Nine,’ most of which can be observed during safari tours in Masai Mara. While the wildebeest migration from July to September is the annual highlight, a Masai Mara safari promises an unforgettable wildlife experience year-round.
For those interested in wildlife photography, the Masai Mara offers unparalleled opportunities to capture stunning images. Below, we present several Masai Mara tour packages for the 2025 and 2026 seasons, ranging from budget-friendly road trips to luxury safari experiences, including luxurious Fly-In Safaris at exclusive Tented Camps. Feel free to explore some of our suggested Kenya Safari itineraries here.
Fly-In Safari Tours to Masai Mara
Fly-In or “Flying Safaris,” as they are often called, offer the convenience of reaching the Masai Mara within an hour from the Wilson Airport in Nairobi. These are typical for certain Safari Camps in the Maasai Mara, particularly those that are more secluded or offer all-inclusive stays with safari and game drives throughout. Flights depart from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport twice daily, and upon landing at the Mara airstrip, guests are welcomed and transferred to their designated Camp or Lodge in time for lunch. Private charters are also available for those seeking a more personalized experience. Game drives are conducted using 4×4 Safari Tour Vehicles provided by the property.
Road Safari Tours to Maasai Mara
Traveling to the Masai Mara by road is the most popular option, typically beginning and ending in Nairobi, with the choice of a 4×4 Landcruiser Jeep or a more economical Safari Minibus (Tour Van). The journey from Nairobi to the Masai Mara usually takes 5 to 6 hours, depending on the selected Camp for your tour. Along the way, you can enjoy various cultural experiences that enrich your safari adventure. The advantage of a road safari trip is its generally lower cost and the opportunity to experience more of Kenya’s scenic countryside. However, some road sections along the route may be in subpar condition.
Types of Masai Mara Safaris Safari Vehicles
In Kenya and Tanzania, two main types of Safari Tour vehicles are employed for wildlife and adventure safari drives: the Tour Minibus/Van and the 4×4 Toyota Landcruiser Jeeps. Both vehicles feature game-viewing roofs that open during safaris, UHF radio calls (useful for locating wildlife in the park and for logistics), and are fully customized for safari purposes. Independent travelers who wish to arrange their own accommodations in Kenya can also hire these tour vehicles, complete with Driver-Guides, for their local transportation needs.
